As Independence Day approaches, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set an example by changing his X (formerly known as Twitter) profile picture to the national flag. Encouraging others to follow suit, he aims to spread patriotic fervor. However, a twist in the tale arises from the recent changes in Twitter's verification rules. Prominent political figures are discovering that adopting the 'Tiranga' as their profile picture might lead to the loss of their coveted blue or gold checkmarks.

The Conundrum:

Leaders like Manohar Lal Khattar, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Pushkar Singh Dhammi, and Pramod Sawant have already lost their verification ticks by participating in this patriotic display. The cause behind this apparent contradiction stems from Twitter's shift in its verification process. Previously, the blue checkmark signified public personalities based on identity, occupation, and popularity. However, the introduction of Twitter Blue, now known as 'X Premium,' altered this dynamic, as users need to pay for verification.

Why has this caused a problem?

Twitter's alteration of verification procedures aims to combat the spread of misinformation. With the rise of users purchasing blue ticks, often having names similar to celebrities and politicians, confusion and misinformation grew. As a response, Twitter introduced new guidelines. The 'X Premium' listing indicates that any changes to profile photos, display names, or usernames will result in a temporary loss of the blue checkmark. The account will be reviewed by the X team, and the checkmark will be reinstated if the account complies with requirements.

This incident highlights the evolving relationship between social media, politics, and national identity, as verified users navigate these changing landscapes while displaying their patriotism.
